Causes
Are many and depend on age: a common cause of abnormal bleeding in young women and teenagers is pregnancy. Many women have bleeding in the first months of a normal pregnancy.

The pills or the device for birth control can also cause abnormal bleeding. If during a menstrual cycle do not ovulate, you could have abnormal bleeding, either light spotting between periods or heavy bleeding during the period. Between 40 and 55 years before menopause (last menstruation), women have months when not ovulating. This can cause abnormal uterine bleeding. The thickening of the endometrium (outer layer of the uterus) is another cause of bleeding. After menopause, hormone replacement therapy is often the origin of uterine bleeding. Other causes include a thickened endometrium and uterine cancer.

Diagnosis
Any woman with abnormal uterine bleeding should be evaluated in a medical consultation. The diagnosis is easy as it relates affected. However, the difficulty lies in determining the cause of it, so often the physician needs and a good history and physical examination, use of laboratory tests including hormonal studies, and making endometrial tissue. They can also be helpful to ultrasonography, transvaginal ultrasound or MRI, which present images of the affected areas.
